Raw (unedited) video taken from a class 142 heading towards Manchester.
I was hoping that the cement works shunt loco would be there but, as the film shows, there was only a Freightliner shed... And a few cement tankers of course!

The interchange yard between Network Rail and the privately owned branch to Castleton Cement Works has long been a favourite location of mine. The cement works branch can be seen curving away about 15 seconds into the video. The yard would make a good basis for a layout but would need to be N scale if modelled in full.

Very interesting prototype.... I agree, would look very nice if modelled in full in N....

I'm not a big fan of N scale these days, too fiddly for aging eyesight, but what I think the scale does do well is panoramic views of trains in scenery. Earles Sidings yard is set in a wonderful location and has trees along the full length of the yard for a backdrop.

The branch disappears into these trees about a third of the way along the yard and shunting is basically the exchange of full and empty rakes instead of sorting out individual wagons, so it would not involve too much coupling and uncoupling.

The main line locos would all be diesels, better runners than kiettles in N scale, and even the branch loco is a BoBo so this too would have better running qualities. It could probably be built on an American SW unit chassis and the bodywork is fairly plain making it a good candidate for scratch building (as would be needed for the unique loco).

In the foreground the Manchester to Sheffield line would play host to a parade of modern DMUs in First Transpennine, Northern and East Midlands liveries if modelled as the current scene or could be backdated to have first generation DMUs and class 31 hauled short rakes of Mk1s plus the daily St Pancras train behind a Peak. Add to this the stone traffic coming out of Great Rocks via Chinley and you've got a busy railway with a good selection of different traffic and loco types.

If you wanted to freelance the layout then it could be transferred to the Manchester to Crewe line and become junction for the fictional branch to Chelford Quarry that I mentioned in reply to Chris's "Inspiration or lack of it" thread or could be the junction for his "Burwardsley Quarry". :)
